What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is widely accepted to be one of the oldest healing sciences still in use, dating back 5,000 years ago to where it originated in India. Today, Ayurveda has been adopted by many individuals worldwide and has even influenced practices such as Homeopathy and Polarity Therapy.

The principle of Ayurveda is to achieve overall well-being, both physically and mentally, spanning to all corners of your life including physical health, diet, mind and consciousness. The practice of Ayurveda focuses on a person's three inner energies, Vata, Pitta and Kapha and seeks to achieve balance between all three. Each individual has a different constitution and therefore has different dominant energies.

Vata dosha:

Vata is the energy that is associated with movement, controlling joint function and the nervous system. If you have a dominant Vata dosha you will likely be creative, light, enthusiastic and open to new experiences.

Pitta dosha:

Pitta is the energy that is associated with your metabolic system, controlling hunger, thirst and body temperature. If you have a dominant Pitta dosha you will likely be very intelligent but prone to hot-headedness and a need for control.

Kapha dosha:

Kapha is the energy that is associated with your body’s structure, controlling electrolyte balance, immunity and movement. If you have a dominant Kapha dosha you will likely be stoic, calm and overall healthy.

Ayurveda and Diet

One of the most powerful ways you can balance your 3 inner doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha is through an Ayurvedic diet. Unlike most diets, this does not focus on counting calories and losing weight, but instead embracing natural remedies through specific food groups and purposeful exclusions. By adopting an Ayurvedic diet you can achieve balanced inner chakras, improved energy and both physical and mental well-being.

One of the ways that sets an Ayurvedic diet apart from the rest, is that it is completely tailored to you and your chakras. If one of your inner energies is out of balance, you can adopt certain foods and eating habits to achieve an equilibrium between Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata Diet:

If you find you are experiencing an imbalance of Vata there are a few general guidelines to help you regain your balance…

  • Include warm, well-cooked and unctuous foods
  • Have smaller more frequent and regular meals
  • Avoid frozen, raw or cold foods
  • Include sweet, ripe and juicy fruits
  • Get plenty of rest

Pitta Diet:

If you find you are experiencing an imbalance of Pitta there are a few general guidelines to help you regain your balance…

  • Avoid excessive amounts of oil in your diet
  • Limit your intake of salty, sour or pungent foods
  • Eat cooling, non-spicy foods
  • Vegetarianism is best for balancing Pitta
  • Exercise during the cooler part of your day

Kapha Diet:

If you find you are experiencing an imbalance of Kapha there are a few general guidelines to help you regain your balance…

  • Eat light and dry foods
  • Include invigorating foods such as bitter, astringent and pungent tastes
  • Try and avoid dairy products
  • Include drier fruits such as apples, apricots and pears
  • Vary your routine
  • Avoid daytime naps
