The Ayurvedic Perspective On Sleep
The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda reminds us that we must embrace good sleep rituals to maintain the balance of mind, body and spirit. Sleep is considered to be the foundation of true health and beauty.
At Mauli Rituals, we have a deep appreciation for the importance of good sleep hygiene. We believe in the transformative power of aromatherapy and meditation, which is why we offer products and share practices that align with these age-old principles.
Meditations for Better Sleep
When we sleep well, our mind, body and skin is able to heal and repair itself. Here are our top two meditations for better sleep.
1. The 4-7-8 Breath Method For Sleep
The 4-7-8 method is a relaxation technique that has ancient roots in pranayama, which is the yogic practice of breath regulation. In this exercise, we breathe in for four counts, hold the breath for seven counts and exhale for eight counts.
Practise this method in a calm and quiet place. You can even use the technique while lying in bed.
- Massage Sleep Dharma Calm Balm on either side of your temples
- Place the tip of your tongue against your front teeth
- Exhale through your mouth and make a whoosh sound
- Close your mouth and inhale through your nose to a count of four
- Hold your breath for a count of seven
- Exhale through your mouth and make a whoosh sound for a count of eight
-
Repeat the process at least 5 times to feel the relaxation effect
2. Peaceful Night Time Visualisation For Better Sleep
- Find a comfortable position in bed
- Spray Sleep Dharma Pillow Mist to create a relaxing bedtime environment
- Close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your breath.
- As you breathe deeply, begin to scan your body from head to toe, relaxing each muscle group as you go.
- Once you have scanned your body, use your imagination to picture a calming nighttime scene e.g. a starry night sky or a full moon over a peaceful lake
- As you lie there, perhaps stargazing or lying on a blanket, notice the different sensations. A light breeze or rustling trees.
- Let yourself feel the stillness of the night. Keep breathing deeply.
- If you feel yourself drifting off, that is perfectly fine. Simply allow yourself to fall asleep.
Here are a few extra tips to help you get a better night’s sleep:
- Create a relaxing bedtime routine
- Ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed
- Get regular exercise but avoid too close to bedtime
- Stop using your phone an hour before bed
